The Physical Science Market

The development of Semiconductors, LEDs, Photovoltaic Cells, Superconducting Materials, all begin in the physics laboratory where the conductive and resistive properties of materials are tested under high magnetic fields and ultra low temperatures. This market study, quantified and segmented the world market for cryostats, cryocoolers, superconducting magnets and related control equipment.

NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Rock Core Analysis

The properties of oil-bearing rocks is measured by lowering a nuclear magnet resonance probe into the well. Rock samples are then taken from deep underground and analysed in the laboratory. This market study looked at the potential for an NMR laboratory instrument with new software, which could reduce analysis time by months.

Light Emitting Diodes

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have long been heralded as the replacement for the incandescent lamp. While LEDs use only ten per cent of the energy of conventional bulbs with a lifetime of 100,000 hours (12 years continuous use), market growth has been disappointing. Main reasons for slow adoption: the success of compact fluorescent lamps, the high cost of LEDs, problems with reliability and colour rendition, reluctant investors.

Manchester Museum of Science & Industry Benchmarking Study

The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) required a benchmarking study to learn from best practice at other museums. MOSI was compared to eight leading Science Museums and Science Centres around the world. The leading science museums in London, Sydney, Chicago and Scotland were among the sources of comparison and inspiration.

Energy Recovery Systems

The report examined the potential for a new machine which gathered waste heat from industrial chimneys and converted that energy directly into electricity, using an Organic Rankine Cycle Engine (W.J.M.Rankine, 19th century Scottish physicist). The study also looked at commercial and micro co-generation, Fuel Cells, Stirling Engines, Micro Turbines and Micro Steam Engines.
